Horse racing at Menangle Park was put on hold when the site was commandeered  by the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II for use as an airfield.  

At 1400 hours on the 29th March 1944, 6 Beaufort aircraft took off for a training flight. Sadly, only 5 were to return. Trouble for the ill-fated A9-550 had started during taking off; 3rd in line...
