Jean grew up in Newtown. She describes the plight of her father, when he returned from the First World War:  “he had to scrape around for a living because his health was so bad”. He was gassed and temporarily blinded, but “the gas had affected his lungs as well”. He was also often unemployed: “During the Depression there was the misery of the men wandering the streets …”.
